Halloween can help teams connect, but costumes and celebrations may cause workplace issues. Simple ground rules keep events positive.

DO:

  • Choose activities that fit the workplace. Some teams love costume contests; others prefer a casual luncheon or potluck.
  • Make participation voluntary. Some employees do not celebrate Halloween. Allow anyone to opt out without pressure.
  • Set clear costume rules. Give examples and ban costumes that are sexual, offensive, unsafe, or violate company policy.
  • Support appropriate activities. Use team games, simple contests, or decorations to encourage engagement.
  • Step in when necessary. Supervisors should handle policy issues quickly and privately.

DON’T:

  • Lower standards. Supervisors must model professional conduct during events.
  • Ignore teasing or complaints. Review concerns promptly and act as needed. Calling something “just a joke” does not excuse harassment.
  • Allow employees to impersonate co-workers. Ban costumes that single out or mock colleagues.
  • Serve alcohol. Keep the event alcohol-free to reduce risks.

Take-Aways:

Clear rules and prompt follow-through keep Halloween festive and professional.
